US Capitol Rally/Protest

These past couple days activity has begun at the Capital grounds due to the events that transpired on January 6. Protestors have gathered due to the arrests that were made on January 6, when hundreds of citizens gathered at that Capitol in protest of the election results between President Trump and Joe Biden. During the protests or rally, the Capital was breached, certain events transpired which prompted the arrest of approximately 500 people. These individuals are still under arrest, kept in harsh conditions, denied bail and charged with certain charges. This post is not meant to discuss their innocence or the validity of their crimes, but rather to question the stance that news outlet have taken over this matter.

The Washington Post published a article called "Republican leaders remain silent as Trump casts perpetrators of Jan. 6 attack as political prisoners", where they take a stance against the protestors present on January 6 and against former President Trump (DeBonis). CBS News released a similar news article with the title of "Heavy police presence as a few hundred protestors trickle in for rally at U.S Capitol. In this article, CBS is also seen taking a stance against former President Trump, but they actually have much more information on the overall events of January 6 and most importantly on the current situation at the Capitol.

Interesting note to address is how most articles online over this matter are from left leaning news outlets not from right leaning news media. Of the very few right leaning articles, such as LifeSite, which is not a major news outlet, they present more information over the politcal prisoners rather than the current protest instead. A overall right leaning stance (from LifeStance) over the matter sounds like this, "Joe Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) has arrested and is holding hundreds of “political prisoners” in a dedicated jail under “harsh almost solitary confinement conditions” while denying them bail and the constitutional right of a speedy trial" (Delaney).

Overall, the few right leaning sources found had more information over the condition and current state of the political prisoners, which they tied in to the current events taking place at the Capital. Meanwhile the left leaning articles focus on two major points: the situation itself in terms of tactical preparedness compared to January 6 and the strong stance against the former president and those who attended the protest.

Overall, if current development news of the situation is what you are looking for... I would recommend a left leaning outlet. However, if more in depth information over the politcal prisoners is desired, I would recommend a right leaning news outlet.

  1. Hi Marcos,
I really appreciate that you took the time to compare the coverage of partisan media outlets as it relates to the latest Capitol rally. I wasn't aware of the right-leaning media's focus on political prisoners and now I'm very curious if there's any truth to the "harsh almost solitary confinement conditions." If there is, that's something that absolutely deserves wider coverage, but since the left-leaning outlets are not covering it too, I have to question the accuracy of those reports. It's unfortunate that we have to take the political leanings of mass media outlets into account when reading their reporting, but a blog like this is very helpful in understanding the various lenses through which outlets might cover a story.

  2. Hello Marcos,

I enjoyed reading your post. I covered this topic too on my blog. Please check it out sometime. My last blog post was about The Associated Press’s article titled “Protest for jailed Capitol rioters: Police ready this time.” The Associated Press posted to their official twitter account (@AP) and stated that “allies of Donald Trump are mounting a Saturday rally at the U.S. Capitol, aimed at supporting the 60 or so people held behind bars among more than 600 charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection. It's unclear how many demonstrators will show up.” I saw tweets and updates after this event took place. It seems that the event was not much of anything and not many people showed up. There have been people questioning if Trump has lost supporters due to the lack of people that attended this rally. What do you think? Did people move on or was the rally not well enough advertised for people to be aware of it? I think people want to steer clear of trouble and are not fighting on Trump’s behalf since he has left office.

  3. Hey Marcos,
You do a great job analyzing multiple news sources and informing us on the benefits of each source depending on their political ideologies. It's important to look at both sides of the political spectrum to be able to make an informed opinion. One of the things I'm most curious about is the conditions of the criminals. If they really are being kept in harsh conditions and are not be given their Constitutional rights, then this needs to be talked about much more, and someone needs to be held responsible. I'm sure there will be much more discussion on this in the near future.
